There has been an assembly witness in Queenstown for many years. The original “Gospel Hall” was located in a rented building on Shotover Street.
When the lease expired and the assembly was unable to purchase the property, they began meeting in the RSA rooms within the Lakes District Council’s Memorial Hall.
The land on which our current chapel stands was generously donated by a local Christian couple in the late 1960s.
The construction of the chapel was made possible through the love and support of members of the Grace Street Bible Chapel in Invercargill. Members of that assembly also played a key role in establishing the Lakeland Park Christian Camp on the Kelvin Heights Peninsula.
Brothers Alan and Harold were true visionaries. Alongside their spiritual work, they also helped launch the Shotover and Kawarau Jet Boat operations—now major tourist attractions in Queenstown.
Alan, ably supported by his wife Eunice, led the construction of our chapel in 1975. He worked with an architect, navigated council planning requirements, and encouraged contributions from other believers. Their dedication and generosity, along with the support of many others, made the chapel we enjoy today a reality. For this, we remain deeply grateful.
In 2005, a much-needed Sunday School room was added to the building. More recently, two accommodation studio units were built beneath the chapel. The income from these units helps offset the costs of maintaining the property and also supports full-time workers and mission efforts internationally.
